And this 8-minute one is probably the best example, only with more ventriloquist dummies (1). Something I’ve noticed in this era of Lynch’s work is his consistent use of aloof, almost rhetorical dialogue, often in the form of questions where it’s unclear who’s being addressed: someone off screen, no one, the audience? (Rabbits is built almost entirely upon this idea.) It’s also fun viewing these for the first time 20+ years later as they seem so impulsive and ephemeral, deeply rooted in an aesthetic and a moment that’s long passed. Like some kind of fleeting secret we weren’t meant to hear. Its context muted or evaporated by time.
