MOVIE #1,610 • 🍿🍿🍿 • 05.07.24 Choosing to film this at the place where they held the boys version concurrently for the first time in Boys/Girls State history feels like an admission that there was no way to frame (or sell) this outside of the shadow of gender in politics. Like there wasn't a movie only about girls doing the dumb fake politics game. That being said, these girls are doing a lot more group singing, so…. (Seriously, when did they learn all these songs?) Look, these documentaries aren't bad in and of themselves. I simply find the subject matter so loathsome and, frankly, boring that they don't work for me. But — that aside — as a film, this is simply the inferior effort in every way: it’s clunky and disjointed, and the characters they signal out aren’t nearly as compelling (and not because they’re GIRLS!). |
