MOVIE #1,561 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 04.22.24 𝘚𝘌𝘈𝘕 𝘉𝘈𝘒𝘌𝘙: 𝘋𝘐𝘙𝘌𝘊𝘛𝘖𝘙 𝘍𝘖𝘊𝘜𝘚 I’m still wrapping my head around this one: another small, immigrant-focused drama by Sean Baker. It’s not as immediate as Take Out and it’s plot — a street-smart hustler (Lucky) working the streets of New York City, selling name brand knock-offs has his life turned upside down when his ex-girlfriend shows up with the son he never knew he had — is almost too heavy-handed. But the performances by the two leads are strong (most of the dialogue was improvised), especially Karren Karagulian in the role of a Lebanese store owner. Baker has a knack for portraying complicated characters: it would have been easy to simply paint Karagulian’s character as a dirtbag but there’s so much nuance, especially in his interactions with Lucky’s kid. I enjoyed it but something felt a little off that I can’t really articulate at the moment. |
