Sean Baker (b. 1971) attended the private NJ high school in the town I group in (I'm a decade younger). I think I did a soccer camp at it one summer before I switched to playing football, but it was otherwise a gated, almost mysterious place I don't even recall ever seeing students at, though maybe that's not unusual as I was getting bussed to the public school twenty minutes away. These facts are neither here nor there, but they're of interest to me and this is my damn website. This is all to say, that Sean Baker has been steadily drifting further and further away from the metro tri-state area as his career has flourished: from trans sex workers in L.A. to poor people living in a motel in a Florida to a former porn star getting in a relationship with a a 17-year-old in Texas.
I have previously reviewed Tangerine and Red Rocket (both excellent) and seen The Florida Project (also great), but I'll be starting from the beginning and going through each film in his oeuvre every other Monday.
Having completed this watch/rewacth, I can say that this was a very difficult filmography to rank. I didn't care for his debut at all and found Prince of Broadway to be average to good. But all five of his other pictures are firmly in the 9/10 area. I'm really looking forward to see what he does next*...
