Memory (2023)

MOVIE #1,675 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 05.28.24
Today is a special TWO 4 TUESDAY, because not only do both films share the same title but they’re both recent pictures that utilize the same topic (dementia) albeit in very different ways. In 2022’s action thriller, it’s more or less an afterthought, a dopey device used to tweak the plot when needed. But here, it’s central to the very themes of the movie. Michael Franco’s Memory stars Jessica Chastain as a single mother and social worker grappling with her past, and Peter Sarsgaard as a man suffering from early onset dementia. The drama is simple but engaging: she can't stand her memories so she's drawn to someone who can no longer make any. It’s an intriguing take on an early onset dementia story, which is a tricky subject in cinema to tackle, I feel. Sarsgaard, who won best actor at the Venice International Film Festival, is really good…

This is the first work by Mexican filmmaker Franco that I’ve seen and I’m definitely adding him to The List. It’s unfortunate that Memory takes such an overly (and unnecessarily) melodramatic turn in the end but I still enjoyed it overall.
