Like many a film fan, the whole thing seems completely weird and/or implausible to me. Are the Taken films any good? Who knows. But there has to be a reason they keep making these movies though, right? He’s been making this type of flick for over a decade now, though, and there is a little 2010s Nic Cage at his worst energy in the performance, I felt. That being said, this film by journeyman Martin Campbell (whose done two Bond films in both the Brosnan and Craig eras) is an absolutely watchable action/crime thriller. I feel like the “hitman with a heart of gold” story was a trope even before Barry, but throw in a little Alzheimer’s (which honestly never greatly factors into the plot until the very end lol) and you got something. The plot, which revolves around an aging hitman (Neeson) and an FBI agent (Pearce) trying to take down a ring of underage sex-traffikers, is easy pickings. But that’s fine. It’s fun to see these perverts get their comeuppance. The “memory” angle + Guy Pearce made me think of Memento. Again, there’s no need to overanalyze this. It’s as enjoyable as it is forgettable (ironically!).
