Qualifying something as weird is definitely lazy and a little hack, but that’s really the only adjective I keep coming back to for this Ari Aster short. On paper it would seem that a movie starring legendary character Richard Riehle as a horny-as-hell P.I. whose dick starts mysteriously shrinking right after he takes on a new case from a client he’s dead set on womanizing would be right up my alley. And this is definitely not “bad,” by any means. But actually seeing that plot unfold, in all its gruesome, close-up detail, was a lot less fun in practice. I wouldn’t say it’s a fully pointless exercise but any ‘point’ certainly gets lost in the process of sitting down to watch Riehle go through what I just described. It’s weird. And gross. I probably shouldn’t be so shocked that Aster’s beginnings include such edgy material as we’ve seen, but it is amazing that this is the same guy who would make Hereditary less than four years later (from a story, not a technical perspective).
