Brightburn

MOVIE #1,758 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 06.24.24 • VOLUME LXVII • Brightburn — written by James Gunn’s brother and first cousin — is a ridiculous movie but mostly fun. This is an allegory for both adolescence/puberty and the sometimes manic desire to have children/be a mother. Also throw in a pinch of oedipal bullshit I guess too. These are things you write in a movie review, sure, but I’m not sure the final product really warrants much deep-thinking in this vein. I really appreciated the jarring spurts of ultraviolence and its unapologetically nihilist ending, which also doubled as sequel bait (hinting at a crossover with Rainn Wilson's character from Super, which was directed by Gunn) and featured a nice cameo by Michael Rooker.

Dunn, Matt Jones and Meredith Hagner, the plot follows Brandon Breyer, a young boy of extraterrestrial origin reared on Earth who discovers he has superpowers, using them with dark intentions. The film was produced and financed by Screen Gems, Stage 6 Films, The H Collective and Troll Court Entertainment. It was released on May 24, 2019.
