MOVIE #1,840 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 07.22.24 MovieJeff on Motern: A FARLEY/ROXBURGH DIRECTOR FOCUS The first Motern movie in five years, Heard She Got Married ushers in the modern, even more prolific era of the Farley/Roxburgh canon. Since it came out in 2021, they’ve released five feature films with another one (just announced!) on the way. I was psyched to see what these recent pictures had to offer as I’m often seeing them ranked among their very best. But I’ll be honest, I struggled to connect with this one. It was until the conclusion — which functions as a sort of reverse Cabin Fever n-word joke (in that: the movie is a comedy then becomes a horror in a flash, instead of vice versa) — when I finally got it (and I 100% did not see the twist coming). I think that was the point, which is fine (and good) but doesn’t negate the fact that the bulk of the action is boring.

This is almost entirely due to Farley’s performance as a dour failure (as opposed to the upbeat one who is so optimistic he doesn’t realize it). Again, this makes perfect sense in the end. Having watched every Motern film in order up until this point, I simply couldn’t process him as the villain, and while the finale is fun, thrilling even, the movie lacks that central figure we can relate to. Chris Peterson — who has been getting bigger and bigger roles — is actually very good as the overzealous mailman who may or may not be a deranged creep. His wildeyed performance is funny and engaging but it lacks the earnestness Farley usually brings to the table in the lead.

Still, it has the usual in-jokes and easter eggs which add to the Motern lore and self-mythologizing, and also features the most original songs. And it’s easily the best looking of any of their digital efforts yet. I probably need to watch it a second time to better appreciate what they were striving for.
