 | MOVIE #1,801 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 07.09.24 They completely overdo the obnoxious guy trope in the beginning with John Mayer, which had me very scared for the rest of the movie. But this settles in nicely. To echo some other sentiments out there, I don’t think Novak is an especially convincing lead actor but he’s clearly a talented writer. There are both great jokes and surprising, serious moments that never come off as pandering, and he weaves them together seamlessly. I definitely liked it and would recommend it, but two other minor complaints are 1) the Finneas soundtrack is cool-sounding but I don’t think it’s the right fit and it’s mixed way too loud, and 2) they went for the big splashy ending, which maybe works better in a vacuum/the short-term but I think a more somber, more subdued finish would have been better suited. |
