Burying the Ex

MOVIE #1,888 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 08.14.24

Dante spent a career making top-notch films inspired by the golden age of B-movies and now — in his most recent feature to date — he's finally made a bonafide, modern day B-movie of his own. Whether this is intentional or the combined product of no funding/losing his fastball is, maybe, up to debate. The beauty of his best work is how you can take them seriously or as pure fluff entertainment and they work equally well. But there's no dual reading for a scene like this…

Or beyond cringe dialogue like this…

“Shit a Prius.” No one has ever said this, not once, ever. Honestly, every scene featuring his half-brother is just the worst/dumbest thing imaginable.

Tonally/visually this is a train wreck. But it does feature some pretty good actors (Anton Yelchin and Alexandra Daddario) and because it’s so bad, it’s probably more interesting than The Hole tbh.

Now that we’ve reached the end of Dante’s theatrical features run, one thing I wish I had compiled during this journey is all the references/scenes where a TV is playing another movie (both in the foreground and background). I’m pretty sure this occurs at least once (and typically several times) in every single one of his films, and Burying the Ex is littered with them. This would make a nice supercut, and maybe one day I’ll get around to it (probably not).

Tomorrow, we take a look at the four full-length anthology movies Joe Dante has been involved with over the years. Stay tuned!
