This had all the pieces to be an enjoyable (enough) kids flick, but something just felt off. The pacing and tone are all over the map. And I’ve never felt strongly one way or the other about John Krasinski The Actor (other than it’s extremely hard not to think of Jim when you see him on-screen) but he’s such an off-putting presence in all of his brief appearances here. Similarly, Ryan Reynolds is giving a muted performance (that sort of makes sense when they hit the final twist of the film, but definitely doesn’t do it any favors for the bulk of it). The lead kid (Cailey Fleming) and all the voice actors (Steve Carell, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Louis Gossett Jr. + a TON of famous cameos — see below) are fine. I watched another 2024 live-action/animation hybrid with a focus on imaginary friends that was MUCH better (Harold and the Purple Crayon — review coming November 1st) despite garnering much worse reviews and totally bombing at the box office.
It would be easier to list who DOESN'T do a voice in this movie, am I right?!
