MOVIE #1,903 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 08.18.24 I was hoping to find one true hidden gem among the fairly extensive non-theatrical feature portion of Joe Dante’s filmography and I’m please to report that THIS IS IT. This is a pitch-perfect black comedy featuring an all-star ensemble cast with a mix of Dante regulars and newcomers bringing their A-game. When you’ve got Phil Hartman playing the President of the United States, you know you’re in for a good time. Sure, the satire is about as subtle as a sledgehammer and there are probably six or seven too many characters, but this still manages to come together nicely. There’s just a perfect mix of straight men and unhinged actors chewing up the scenery. Of all the media I’ve reviewed since Wednesday, this is the entry I most recommend checking out. |

The Second Civil War is a satirical black comedy television film directed by Joe Dante for the HBO cable television network. The film details the build-up to an ethnically-fueled civil war in an alternate future United States as a result of unsustainably excessive immigration, political self-interest, and ratings-pursuing news media. It was released on March 15, 1997.
