MOVIE #1,917 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 08.21.24 In solidifying my quest to watch all the movies ever made, I think this Director Focus is a very fitting venture. Let’s face it, Thea Sharrock is a totally competent but incredibly MID filmmaker, as the kids say. Wicked Little Letters was the film that set me off on this journey. I watched the afternoon matinee at the Civic Theater of Allentown alongside a decent crowd (I would say here were maybe twenty people in attendance, of which I was the youngest audience member by several decades lol). At barely a 7/10, it’s still the best thing she’s made to date (for adults), if only for the very inspired performances by Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley. Otherwise — as the mean age of the crowd would indicate — the target demo for Sharrock’s films seems to be either under 10 or over 70. But I can’t really hate on that. As we’ll see with our next Director Focus, there’s plenty of stuff out there for the young and the hip.

Based on a true scandal, it follows an investigation into the anonymous author of numerous crudely insulting letters sent to the residents of seaside town Littlehampton. It was released on September 9, 2023.
