SERIES: TWO FOR TUESDAY

This speaks more to my major blindspot re Hong Kong cinema, but I really loved this remake (written and produced by legend Tsui Hark) of the 1987 super NSFW cartoon. This is actually way less NSFW but equally as weird. I barely knew what the hell was going on (I was definitely more engaged with the anime’s plot) but its visuals are extremely rad. That this isn’t considered both A) a very good remake, and B) a notable Hong Kong action film speaks more to my lack of knowledge on the era/genre than anything else. But these effects are truly spectacular (and relentless): a wonderful mix of animated/early CGI and practical. This is an area of film history I need to explore ASAP.

Look at this shit…

The last half-hour of this one beautiful extended set-piece. I could make 100 gifs out of the whole movie but I honestly don't want to spoil it. Go seek it out for yourself.

The Wicked City (Chinese: 妖獸都市; Cantonese Yale: Yíu sau dōu síh) is a 1992 science fiction film directed by Peter Mak and produced by Tsui Hark. It is a live-action film adaptation of the Japanese anime of the same name, which in turn is based on the first novel of the series of the same name by Hideyuki Kikuchi. The film stars Jacky Cheung, Leon Lai, Yuen Woo-ping, Roy Cheung, Tatsuya Nakadai, Michelle Reis, and Carman Lee. Michelle Reis said that Tsui Hark actually directed many scenes himself. It tells fictional story of conflicts and relationship between demon-like creatures and humans in 1990s' Hong Kong. The film was one of the most popular Tsui Hark productions in the USA and Europe, and still plays in festivals and midnight screenings around the USA and Europe. It was released on November 27, 1992.
