JENNIFER KENT: DIRECTOR FOCUS & FILMOGRAPHY RANKING

I make a point to watch as many female directors as possible. IDK I'm just woke like that (and also an ally). Of course, the history of the medium has not been kind to the fairer sex. I would go as far as calling it a G.D. Boys Club! (but that's me) So, whenever I can tack on a woman's name to the D.F. page wall, I jump at the opp. Aussie Jennifer Kent is the perfect example of someone who has struggled to get things made because of her gender. After exploding out the gate with her debut genre feature The Babadook in 2014 (a critically praised, minor hit that became an instant cult classic), she's only completed one other full-length (as well as short feature for Netflix's Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities called "The Murmuring"). I was not kind to her follow-up, period piece The Nightingale, when I reviewed it in 2021. I should probably give it another shot because I still really loved The Babadook when I rewatched it recently (I also checked out the 2005 short film Monster which was a precursor).

There's no real point in doing a ranking at this given time (you can figure it out), but I look forward to checking out her future work.
