🎙️ EPISODE 332: 03.02.2021

Part of the Kids in the Hall lore is that their original dissolution was in no small part due to Dave Foley 'moving on to bigger and better things'. I am using scare quotes because what is bigger and better than being in the sketch comedy troupe of all-time? Foley was the only Kid who didn't co-write the screenplay for the lone KITH movie (the great Brain Candy) and he already been working on the NBC sitcom NewsRadio for a couple seasons when this film came out in 1997. Foley, who co-wrote and plays the lead in The Wrong Guy, a movie which–despite having only a brief Kevin McDonald cameo and a total of zero dudes in drag–is still very much in the Kids in the Hall wheelhouse....

Quick shoutout here to The Best Show with Tom Scharpling. It was on this late February episode where a caller brought up this largely forgotten about film (it was a direct-to-video release in the United States). It's a pretty great comedy that holds up, overall. Totally subverting the viewers' expectations right from the get-go (Dave Foley only thinks he's a guy on the run for a crime he didn't commit; everyone else, in the movie and the audience, knows that he's innocent) and it builds off that premise and the bumbling idiot at its center. Also, I liked how it was set in Cleveland for no reason in particular. Oh, and the members of Barenaked Ladies make cameos as singing policemen...

There are a bunch of great character actors in bit roles and some classic Kids-esque bits (like the concept of good bankers being taken down by the evil local farmers). Bottom line: if you like KITH, this is a must-see, not quite on Brain Candy's level but closer than I would've imagined.
