🎙️ EPISODE 332: 03.02.2021 *Review starts @ ~ 13:33 I really hope that this film gets the word-of-mouth success it deserves, eventually. It seems like the death of movie theaters has been just as harmful for comedies as it has big budget action flicks. Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar never got higher than 3rd on any of the VOD streaming charts. I'm far from some expert on the economics of this current environment, but Bridesmaids (Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig's first film as co-writers) pulled in over a quarter of a billion dollars. And this is every bit as funny as, if not more so, in addition to being worlds more creative and weird. It's honestly one of the funniest movies I've seen in the last decade, probably longer.

Mumolo (Barb) and Wiig (Star) have created characters here that are the perfect "fish out of water" comedy vessels. You could throw these two middle-aged Nebraskan ladies into any scenario and the laughs would ensue. But that's not what makes Barb and Star so special. It's a total throwback movie, harkening back both mainstream action-packed comedy romps of the 80s as well as the gag-a-second Zucker Brothers slapstick spoofs. I really think you're going better off going in cold (like I did), so I'll leave this critique spoiler-free. I can only say that if you've seen the trailer.... it is NOT what you're thinking it is.
