MacGruber

🎙️ EPISODE 9: 04.09.2015

MacGruber, while I haven't seen it in many years, strikes me as a movie that likely holds up. In fact, it just celebrated its golden tenth year anniversary. Congrats! In a sense, this kicked off a second wave of SNL adjacent films, directed by The Lonely Island's Jorma Taccone. A full-length based on one of the shorter and most specific of parody sketches, this should not have worked so well. But it plays with the fact that it's a bad idea to the point that any connection to Richard Dean Anderson's TV MacGyver is obliterated by the end. It works because of Will Forte and Kristen Wiig in the lead roles, but also because of the rest of its genius casting: Ryan Phillippe as the deliriously deadpan sidekick, Val Kilmer as the villain, great supporting roles by Maya Rudolph and Powers Boothe and some so-random-they-work cameos by a gaggle of WWE stars and NBA player Amar'e Stoudemire as himself. But it's really the underrated/underappreciated Forte who makes it all click. I'd watch anything he's in, especially if he's the lead.
