A surprisingly enjoyable kids flick. Look, this did not hit the highs of Pixar tenderness but it avoids the lows of other recent children's movies that have much much higher RT scores (*cough* Ralph Breaks the Internet *cough*). And yes, the mom character’s death fake-out was cheap as all hell (although, my morbid brain kinda appreciated it on some level). If I grade the genre on the curve of "How Much Did They Appeal to MY Kid" then this movie is off the charts. Because she loves it and is constantly mimicking John Oliver's porcupine's "Skipping to safety! Skipping to safety!" bit. Which is such a dumb bit, but... yeah, it works. It clearly does. What is a mostly cohesive storyline goes completely off the broken roller coaster rails as soon as the chimpanzombies make an appearance, but, counterpoint: chimpanzombies? Yeah OK. This movie is dumb; it's play for warmth is totally overwrought. It's not easy to love. But I can say "Skipping to safety! Skipping to safety!" in a bad English accent and get a laugh immediately. And that's something. That's worth a lot to me. |
