🎙️ EPISODE 340: 03.19.2021 *Review starts @ ~ 15:31
Co-directed by one of the more underrated comedic directors (Jared Hess, he of the unimpeachable trio of two-word titles, Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre, and Gentlemen Broncos) working today, I was intrigued by the simple nature of this as a left-field pivot. A three-parter, made-for-Netflix, Murder Among the Mormons tells the story of a seemingly forgotten about crime from 1985 (in terms of my memory/knowhow anyways). With plenty of red herrings, both real and contrived, the shocking twist this takes nevertheless pays off (so, pro tip: go in cold). I'm not sure the Errol Morris-inspired recreations worked or were needed, and it's a bit slow to get going, but the bulk of episodes 2 and 3 are, for the most part, extremely strong. And it's worth checking out if you're looking for a solid true crime docuseries among the endless sea of true crime docuserieses. |
