🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 | 🎙️ EPISODE 416: 03.08.22 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟏𝟎-𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐞 RANKING GREENAWAY 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 A companion piece of sorts to the feature film (Prospero's Books) that would directly follow it, stylistically (vast use of overlays) and thematically (based on a famous preexisting text, in this case: Dante's Inferno––8 of the 34 cantos). It's crazy to think something as experimental as this aired on the BBC as four 22-minute episodes. It's far more lo-fi but technically similar to Greenaway's feature Shakespeare adaptation in that it juxtaposes the narrated language with an array of visual storytelling methods, often presented at the same time. The main differences here are the inclusion of found footage clips and talking head documentary-style pop-ups wherein a panel of "experts" (including famed naturalist Sir David Attenborough) comment on Dante's themes and such. I preferred this (to Prospero) in large part because the intriguing commentary provided a backbone for the rather difficult, dated source material. |
