🎙️ EPISODE 612: 12.05.22 The joy of this is really tied to a few set-pieces showcasing some glorious in-camera FX work, namely the bonkers leprechaun jig scene and the psychedelic horse, banshee and death coach (see below). The plot mostly revolves around Darby and the Leprechaun King trying to trick one another, a pre-Bond Sean Connery looking handsome and Janet Munro in one of her very first roles being as adorable as possible. There's a serious sense of fun throughout and even a weird authenticity re the Gaelic lore even though it was filmed mostly on the Disney lot in Southern California. This is kind of the magic of Walt Disney: transporting you places in your mind without ever leaving home. He even offers this adorable quote of thanks as a title card after the opening credits...

Darby O'Gill and the Little People is a 1959 American fantasy adventure film produced by Walt Disney Productions, adapted from the Darby O'Gill stories of Herminie Templeton Kavanagh. Directed by Robert Stevenson and written by Lawrence Edward Watkin, the film stars Albert Sharpe as O'Gill alongside Janet Munro, Sean Connery, and Jimmy O'Dea. It was released on June 24, 1959.
