🎙️ EPISODE 644: 02.14.23

At what first seems like your standard 'period piece for the sake of a period piece' (1998! Late grunge and indie rock!!) quirky girl with blue hair acting all quirky turns into quite a different movie by the final act, although the literal "tw" at the beginning for drug use and anxiety probably should've been the tip off. Look. Anxiety disorder is extremely complicated. There's no one-size-fits-all diagnosis OR cure. Telling a story so explicitly about this topic is difficult. I guess, what I'm trying to say is, you appreciate The Sopranos more and more when you least expect it.

This one fills out the checklist for expected tropes and rehashed ideas pretty quickly: our 20-year-old protagonist still goes to see her pediatrician (Henry Winkler), her parents are loving but aloof, bf breaks up with her because she lacks focus on her career, etc. etc
It's all chugging long exactly like you'd expect it before it goes full-on, over-the-top after school special. This is kind of a blessing and a curse. It becomes less of a movie and more of a tool for helping younger people cope in similar situations, and that's admirable even if I have huge issues with the execution of these final scenes (all of the lines seemed like they were plucked out and inserted randomly; it's meant to convey the anxiety and manic nature of the situation but it doesn't feel even remotely natural). It even ends with a mental health advocacy prompt and crisis contact number before the credits. So it's difficult to really judge it as 'movie' when it feels so much like a PSA.
