🎙️ EPISODE 666: 03.16.23 My maiden voyage (descent?) into the world of The Asylum, the brilliant and/or evil film company and distributor responsible for countless "mockbusters" and schlock (the Sharknado franchise, etc. etc.). It's fitting a watched TWO films from their never-ending supply of crap for this special, extremely vile episode. This one, not to be confused with the concert film Iron Maiden: Flight 666, was probably a bit more enjoyable in so much as its comparatively lower-fi aesthetic (a single, horrible-looking / unrealistic location: the fake interior of a commercial airliner) gives it a certain charm that the (equally fake) interiors of the Titanic III (lol) lacked. I can't get too caught up in this...

Come on, nerds. Let's do better. There's two ways to play these really low budget movies. Mess with the form by injecting humor (either intentionally or otherwise — the latter can be genius, but the former is rarely ever good) or play it as straight as possible and that's what they do here. It's risky, but commendable in a weird way, honestly. This is basically an exercise in how many strange, hopefully unique supernatural elements can you film on a fake plane without completely losing the audience. I know that these visuals are 'bad' but I also sort of liked them??...

None of it's 'good' — I'm not saying that. But it's definitely not bad in a overtly comical way. I can appreciate it on face value. If that makes me a weirdo, well, I'm a weirdo. (I'm a squirrel making a movie review website so what's 'weird' anyway?)

The ending leans into much further into chaotic campiness territory, but it works somehow. They also didn't play fast and lose with the asinine rules as you might expect a cheapo horror flick of this ilk to do (the ghosts can't actually physically hurt you but they can compel you to kys, for example). Look, I'm new to this game. I could see these running afoul fairly fast but, for now, count me as pro-Asylum.
