Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives

MOVIE #1,200 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 10.20.23

50 MOVIES IN 32 DAYS!

This movie begins with a non-psycho but still crazy Tommy Jarvis (played by a third different actor!) going to dig up Jason's grave so he can torch the remains and send him to hell? Sure! Why not. Well, they accidentally electrocute the corpse instead via lightning bolt creating the mutant supernatural Jason Voorhees zombie that would be the mode he functions in for the rest of the series. The comedy here is more overt than ever before with intentional meta elements (a gravedigger winkingly notes, “some folks have a strange idea of entertainment”) and while it's few and far between and not quite LOL-funny, I certainly appreciate them trying something new (there is still some goofy shit, like the painfully unfunny paintball dorks, however).
But like The Final Chapter, this one really moves, featuring more car chases and guns than ever before too. One of the few Friday flicks to have a dual writer-director (Tom McLoughlin), it’s a much more focused movie that feels like the proper franchise reload after A New Beginning’s copycat killer misfire.

So as we close out this week in the world of Jason, I would rank them thusly (from worst to first):

We’re back next Monday with the final four sequels + the Freddy vs. Jason crossover to close things out. Stay tuned!

Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (stylized onscreen as Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI) is a 1986 American slasher film written and directed by Tom McLoughlin, and starring Thom Mathews, Jennifer Cooke, David Kagen, and C.J. Graham. It is a sequel to Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985) and the sixth installment in the Friday the 13th franchise, being the last one to feature Tommy Jarvis (Mathews) as the protagonist. Continuing from the events of the previous film, the plot follows Tommy after he accidentally resurrects mass murderer Jason Voorhees (Graham) while attempting to destroy his body to ensure he will not return. While Jason returns to Crystal Lake for another killing spree, Tommy must overcome his fear of the masked killer that has haunted him for years and find a way to stop him once and for all. It was released on August 1, 1986.
