MOVIE #1,255 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 11.28.23 This is an average modern western that’s perfectly watchable and totally inessential. Greengrass and Hanks know what they’re doing, so even when you can feel all the beats coming a mile away, it still mostly works. And shout-out to the kid actor, Helena Zengel, working in her first English-language feature. It’s a really tough role, a German-American raised by Native Americans who only speaks their dialect, and she’s really good. Totally OK movie with “world” in the title. And, hey? It’s the last day I’m doing this gimmick and it was tough finding recent(ish) films that fit the bill.

News of the World is a 2020 American Western film co-written and directed by Paul Greengrass, based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Paulette Jiles, and starring Tom Hanks and introducing Helena Zengel in her international film debut. The film follows an aging Civil War veteran who must return a young girl who was taken in by the Kiowa, and raised as one of them, to her last remaining family. She has lost both her birth and Kiowa families. It was released on December 25, 2020.
