MOVIE #1,448 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 03.18.24
ice cream truck is an extremely notable early entry in The Mark Baumer Collection. It is a video diary of his job driving an ice cream truck. All of Mark's off-kilter observational/confrontational hallmarks that would become prevalent in the later work are present here. When he passes a giant Native American statue, he remarks: "Imagine if all Indians were that big. We would have would have been FUCKED when we came to this country. They would have just eaten us." This immediately cuts to Mark screaming out the window, "JUST IN CASE YOU DID NOT KNOW WHAT I'M DOING, I'M DRIVING AN ICE CREAM TRUCK" to people walking along the sidewalk. He does a little taste-testing of the products on his down-time. This takes up the bulk of the 10-minute run-time as he gives food reviews for various ice-cream pop creations, like Bugs Bunny and SpongeBob ("there's no pants on this guy, just a big square head"). He then scream-sings while filming as he drives the truck: "ICE CREAM TRUCKS GO WHERE THEY WANT!"
The short ends with a postscript title card ("In memory to all the ice cream trucks put to rest in fields around the world") and a slideshow of still photography of the truck set to music more hilarious inter-titles like "Just one of the guys" (juxtaposed next to a picture of the truck parked in a line of red dump trucks). The film concludes with the message, "Thank you for watching another Everyday Yeah production*."

As many of these early posts have an extremely impromptu and ephemeral feel, ice cream truck stands out as a more complete object, an early signal of things to come.

*That's a reference to the still active website everydayyeah.com wherein Mark posted a picture of some place that he'd graffitied the word "Yeah" onto the scenery via black Sharpie every single day for years, often in a hard-to-find small print. This created a "Where's Waldo?" aspect to one of Mark's first and longest running internet projects.
