This is familiar territory for Hitchcock at this point, although where this one differs is that it breaks his cardinal rule: we don't see the bomb under the table. Is Uncle Charlie a vicious killer or an accomplice? Are these hints red herrings or are the damning evidence? This is also the first villain in a leading role and Joseph Cotten is really great as a classic two-face: beloved family member on the outside, cold-hearted killer on the inside. The B-plot with dad and his nerdy pal is basically a proto true crime podcast. We’ve finally reached the period in A.H.'s filmography where nearly every movie feels like it’s gonna be pretty good to great. |
