One thing I’ll be doing over the next 1-50 years is filling in the gaps of filmographies of directors whose work I’ve partly reviewed outside of the purview of an official/chronological Director Focus. I eventually want to watch every film ever made so this was inevitable. Today I’m starting with two, possibly unlikely names that have been on my list: the documentarian Chris Smith and this man, Jack Sholder. This guy has done it all over a career that mostly spanned through the 80s and 90s, from TV movies to horror franchises, though he’s best known for his work in the latter genre. But he started out here, with this quaint short film based on a story by Katherine Mansfield.
This is just a nice little character study that touches on class/privilege, grief and growing up, all in the span of under thirty minutes. It was a nice change of pace and you can watch it on YouTube here.
