Supernova (2020)

MOVIE #1,760 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 06.25.24
There were a bunch of Supernovas to choose from but these Alzheimer's movies are really finding my radar for some reason (hopefully not a prescient one! I’m saying I don’t want my mind to go, folks). This really gets at the physical deterioration inherent with the disease in a way that's put forth plainly and without pandering. Still, this is a tricky subject to tackle and the films in this very specific subgenre are geared to touch an equally specific nerve almost by default. You can break free of these restrictions by using the degeneration as a mere element within a different kind of story (like Liam Neeson in the crime thriller Memory) but that's even trickier to get right in a way. You run the risk of whittling this enormous strain down to nothing more than a character trait that can be used as plot fodder, like being scared of heights or allergic to peanuts. But where this succeeds is leaning into the aspect of agency and how/when one chooses to die when dealing with this terminal diagnosis. I was weary as this began, but it reeled me in.
