The town where my father learned to drink soda

MOVIE #1,997 • SCORE 9/10 • 09.30.24
SERIES: THE MARK BAUMER COLLECTION

Some rare autobiography: Mark does his recent voiceover thing over footage of The Moxie Festival in Lisbon, Maine, named after a brand of soda. The poetry is oblique but begins, “my father was born in this town…” which I believe is true. Mark’s father Jim actually wrote a book about the regional soda. Much of his artistic output seems to be devoid of what any normal person would recognize as humanity, but that’s clearly not true. You just have to look a little harder, deeper. This movie cuts out mid-sentence, strangely, as if to let the viewer know that perhaps we’ve gotten a bit too close for comfort at this moment.
