The Answer

MOVIE #1,597 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 05.01.24 a SPIKE LEE Director Focus Joint Today is a big day on this website: new month = the beginning of THREE (3!) new chronological Director Focus serieses, on Maya Deren, Jane Campion and this man, the one and only Spike Lee. The only existing or accessible footage from this very early Spike Lee short is part of this short documentary that also explores some of his first features, like Do the Right Thing. It's a shame because The Answer has a very good farcical set-up (A Black screenwriter is hired to write the $50,000,000 remake of "The Birth of a Nation" — a little more context here) even if the actual look and feel very much feels like a student film. But ya gotta start somewhere and that's what I'm doing here: every other Wednesday, I'll be going through ALL of Lee’s extensive filmography (134 credits and counting on IMDb!). So at that rate, this will conclude by or around the year 2030 (I wish I was joking!).

While attending NYU in the early ’80s, Lee wrote, directed and produced “The Answer,” which concerns a black filmmaker who gets hired to remake “The Birth of a Nation.” It was released on December 17, 1980.
