Not to oversell this (because we still have freaking Metropolis — ever heard of it? — to get to) but this truly puts every other silent movie I’ve seen to shame. The scale and scope of its genius set design (the mise-en-scène, if you will) stacks up against any era’s productions. Sure, this has more to do with my lack of knowledge as far as pre-talkies cinema is concerned, but it’s still abundantly clear that this is the good stuff. I decided to break this mammoth picture up into two posts. The film itself — clocking in at just under five hours — was released this way, with Part 1 coming out in early 1924 and Part 2, a couple months later.
