The Wicker Man (1973) is packed with so much subversive imagery and weirdness and none of it has the impact they probably originally intended here in Hellscape 2021 but it still makes for a delightful watch. Small frogs are placed in the mouths of children, dead skin is draped on planted trees atop gravesites, and an ultra-religious cop is burned alive inside a colossal wicker man statue overlooking the ocean.
I appreciated that it didn't really take a side in the moral argument between traditional worship and warped hedonism. I'm not sure it lives up to the hype of "the Citizen Kane of horror movies" – which, according to Wikipedia, is "an oft-quoted phrase attributed" (LOL the source for this is literally just a google search using those terms) –but it's certainly a well-made flick that holds up. Writer-director Robin Hardy–who died in Reading on 1 July 2016; he was survived by his fifth wife, Victoria Webster (married 2000), and eight children–actually made a spiritual sequel in 2011, The Wicker Tree, based on his wonderfully titled book Cowboys for Christ. He only directed three films in lifetime and two of them were in the Wickerverse.
Now that he's dead, we'll likely never see the John Wick/Wicker Man crossover that fans across the globe have been pining for. Sad!
