🎙️ EPISODE 300: 01.24.2021 *Review starts @ ~ 2:41:30

This is a deeply moving film, and I'll be honest, during the 'warmth of the hive' metaphor, it got a little dusty in here. I loved it. The third feature from Debra Granik (Winter's Bone) is an extremely personal and believable journey, a small story about an Iraq War vet with PTSD and his young daughter as they try to navigate an impossible life. It's a story about love and loss, and how relentlessly cruel the world can feel and be. But throughout the darkness, there's a constant shimmer of hope, in the form of Thomasin McKenzie, a New Zealand actress, who delivers one of the most astonishing performances I've ever seen in the role of the daughter. When people talk about being present onscreen during a performance, this is what they're talking about. You believe every thing and every word. When it's over, you'll immediately want to watch it again with someone you love.

*** part of THE BIG EPISODE 300 EXTRAVAGANZA wherein I reviewed 36 movies, mostly live reads of critiques I wrote between 2009-2012. But this one was one of 6 that I watched and wrote recently, OK??. ***
