The Brothers Solomon

🎙️ EPISODE 300: 01.24.2021 *Review starts @ ~ 1:36:36

What a weird movie. Will Arnett and Will Forte (who wrote the script) are brothers who are raised in the North Pole because their Mom dies, and their Dad (Lee Majors) home-schools them and finds Eskimo women to be their prom dates. Eventually, they make it back to the lower 48 and Dad goes into a coma, so they have to impregnate a woman they solicit off Craigslist (Kristen Wiig) because bringing a new baby into the world will make their Dad not die. And maybe you’ll gather all that if you’re not still laughing at the opening credits.

The opening credits are hilarious. They’re set against a green background on Comic Sans as close-up shots of Will Arnett and Will Forte slide into the frame then turn and look longingly at the names, and then turn back to the camera to make a plethora of funny faces, all set to “The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song” by The Flaming Lips. But don’t take my word for it.
You see, the two Wills have no social graces at all—what with their North Pole upbringing and all. And this is why they get into all sorts of wacky predicaments. Will F. goes to meet a young lady’s father and he kisses him on the mouth because that is something Will A. told him was an appropriate and polite thing to do. Alternately, Will A. spends an evening wearing shorts and a sports coat, and paying for random women’s groceries at the grocery store because that isn’t creepy at all; women love when you do that! None of that’s stuff really matters, though. The plot is mostly secondary to the succession of random, irreverent jokes.

Also, it’s pretty funny that Kristen Wiig’s (Wonder Woman 1984) face is cropped off in the movie poster. Also also, America’s Sweetheart Bob Odenkirk directed this film. Honestly, I don’t why it only got a 6 score from me. Feels like it should be higher?

*** part of THE BIG EPISODE 300 EXTRAVAGANZA wherein I reviewed 36 movies, mostly live reads of critiques I wrote between 2009-2012. The finished product above is a highly edited version of the truly embarrassing one that was read during the five-hour podcast recording. I guess this is growing up. ***
